smtp mail relay - relaying denied

'Relaying Denied' errors when sending mail?

The relaying denied error is seen when you are trying to send email to a server that is not configured to accept and 'relay' (send on) your email.

This usually happens when:

  • You are trying to use one ISP's SMTP server while connected to the Internet using another ISP's internet connection.
  • The server is mis-configured or cannot authenticate you correctly.

The best solution we have found is to use an 'authenticated' SMTP mail relay - the main benefits of this are:

  • You can connect and send mail from almost any ISP - so no more changing settings.

It is a dedicated SMTP mail server solution so you also benefit from:

Excellent reliability and less chance of mail delays caused by congestion on your outgoing server.

  • More generous message size limits - some ISP's only let you send 2-3Mb file attachments with messages.
  • Some ISP's will not let you use your own domain name when sending mail - the insist that you use email@your-isp.com rather than you@your-domain-name.com

We have reviewed various different SMTP mail relaying services and recommend AuthSMTP for both its low cost and range of additional facilities.
